The red rice of Penebel is among the oldest cultivated varieties still grown in Bali. Its deep russet-burgundy colour comes from anthocyanin-rich bran layers that are left completely intact. This is whole grain rice in the truest sense, polished only to remove the outer hull.
The grain has a pleasantly nutty, slightly earthy flavour and a satisfying chew. It pairs naturally with the bold, aromatic dishes of Balinese cuisine — lawar, sate lilit, pepes ikan and absorbs spiced coconut broth beautifully. It can also be blended with white rice for a gentler introduction to whole grain eating.
Go ahead, have your rice straight from UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE site.
